Spring is here and I’ve been receiving invitations to attend baby-related events lately. This has spurred my memory to recall that around this time last year, we hosted a lovely and intimate neutral gender reveal party for Baby Badau at our place.
Even before becoming pregnant, I had dreamed of having a gender reveal party and being completely surprised to find out whether we would have a boy or girl. The husband, however, didn’t want to have anything to do with that! He absolutely HAD to know as soon as the ultrasound tech could tell.
He gave me the option of not knowing, and finding out for myself at the gender reveal, but how the heck was I to do that when I knew that he knew?? That just takes all the fun out of it and there was no way.
So I opted to find out at the ultrasound as well, and my vision of ugly cry tears at a reveal in front of my family disappeared.
I decided that even though both of us would know the gender of Baby Badau, I still really wanted to style and host a cute event. It would still be nice to surprise our family. It’s the event planner in me – never give up an opportunity to host an incredible party!
Picking the perfect theme
I see a lot of blue vs pink, moustaches vs lipstick, and bow ties vs tutus.
I didn’t want our gender reveal to have any of those things because in this day and age, let’s just be real – lots of girls’ favourite colour is blue, real men wear pink, women have upper lip hair, men wear makeup, women look hot in bow ties and no one really bats an eye if a man rocks a tutu.
So, visions of an intimate, casual and elegant al-fresco luncheon dressed in white, natural canvas and brown kraft paper danced in my head. And our neutral gender reveal party was born!
All the DIY Details
Because the event was small, and I felt like being very hands on and had some time on my hands, there were a lot of DIY details.
I painstakingly wrote “Baby Badau” on all the hand cut brown kraft paper drink flags. I do love how they turned out! Perfectly imperfect.
The only pink and blue I had was in the framed sign I drew up for the front entrance. This framed sign included the most popular wives’ tales to help guests with their gender guesses.
Another DIY project were the bows and flower pins in printed fabrics. This was the most gender neutral thing I could come up with for guests to indicate their guesses.
Upon arrival, guests were asked to select either a bow or flower boutonniere to wear, indicating their gender guess.
Neutral and Boho Sweets Table
More and more I tend to prefer neutral and simple set ups. Everything you see here is handmade by me!
I’m especially proud of how the cake topper turned out. I drew it in Adobe Illustrator and cut it out with my Silhouette Cameo machine.
Yup…I also painstakingly hand wrote on all the cupcake toppers. At least I didn’t hand cut the circles! I have a round paper puncher for that.
The Reveal!
Baby Badau’s gender was revealed upon a bite into these handmade cupcakes.
The blue cake in the centre was actually cut in the shape of a heart, but no one can tell.
Detail fail.
I loved our small, simple neutral gender reveal party! It was perfect and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Except maybe to have had the chance to be surprised myself at the gender reveal. 🙂
What do you guys think? Would you rather want to know the baby’s gender at the ultrasound or be surprised in front of loved ones? Let me know in the comments below!

This would be such a beautiful party!
Thanks Danielle. I loved this party!
I think I’m gonna take your idea on the neutral cake! I was also thinking pink/blue parties are sp cliche so I was looking into more eucalyptus pink/green colors. We know the gender as well because I’m a planner and HAVE to know but would also love to have been surprised at the same time
